Fairfax County Officials Urge Parents to Help Prevent Underage and Binge Drinking Among New Graduates

As Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) seniors prepare to graduate this month, their parents and guardians are being asked by key county leaders to talk with their sons and daughters about the significant health and legal risks associated with underage and binge drinking. National research shows that 70 percent of college students say they are still influenced by a parent’s guidance regarding alcohol and drug use.

“Because college freshmen are away from home and your guidance, many of them mistakenly believe that there are no immediate consequences for drinking alcoholic beverages,” wrote Kathy Smith, School Board Chair, Sharon Bulova, Board of Supervisors Chair, and David M. Rohrer, chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, in a letter mailed to more than 13,000 families.

Fairfax County Students Participated in “Project Sticker Shock”

As a Stand Against Underage Drinking and Related Problems Fairfax County students will spend part of their Saturday reminding adults that it is illegal to purchase and provide alcohol to anyone under 21. Youth participating in Project Sticker Shock, an educational program of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), will visit participating stores and place stop sign reminder stickers on beer cases, wine coolers and other alcohol products that might appeal to young drinkers. By participating in this project, youth throughout the state are taking a proactive stand against underage drinking and its related problems. Project Sticker Shock
