Parent Awareness and Education Programs

Super Bowl Sunday can be a great family day.

If you're hosting a party, remember that 21 is the legal drinking age. Don't be a party to underage drinking. Parents, the alcohol advertisements during the game can be a good teachable moment; you and your children can talk later about what they thought about them and you can discuss the real dangers of underage drinking.

And in another prevention note, be careful if you're on the roads. It is one of the most dangerous days on our nation's highways. On Super Bowl Sunday 2009, 50% of U.S. crash fatalities involved drivers or motorcycle riders with blood alcohol concentrations of .08 grams per deciliter or higher, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Our partners Fairfax County Police Department and Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) urge caution. Take the advice of WRAP and develop a game plan to prevent drunk driving on Super Bowl Sunday. Virginia motorists are encouraged to reported suspected drunk drivers by dialing #77 on wireless telephones. View FCPS news release.
