New Youth Survey Results

Fairfax County Youth Survey Results: A Window into the Lives of Our Youth.

Results of the recently released Youth Survey were presented at the last regular meeting of the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County on Jan. 23. 

The Youth Survey, a comprehensive, anonymous and voluntary survey given each year to students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12, examines behaviors, experiences and other factors that influence the health and well-being of the county's youth. The Youth Survey is a collaboration of Fairfax County Government and the Fairfax County Public Schools. The results provide a snapshot of Fairfax County youth and serve as a barometer of the community's effectiveness fostering healthy choices in young people.

"The results will be used by the Unified Prevention Coalition in its strategic planning process as it reviews community progress in preventing youth alcohol and other drug use and sets priorities for continued or expanded prevention efforts," said UPC Executive Director Diane Eckert. "The UPC thanks all those who have worked to provide this important information critical to our collaborative prevention efforts."

Topics covered include:

  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.
  • Bullying, cyberbullying and other forms of aggression.
  • Physical and mental health.Extracurricular and civic engagement.
  • Risk and protective factors.

The Prevention Toolkit – Now That I Know, What Do I Do?

The online Prevention Toolkit, based on the Youth Survey, is a collection of suggestions, tools and resources to assist families, school staff, PTAs, community- and faith-based organizations, social clubs and others promote the well-being of youth in our community.

The Prevention Toolkit is divided into three areas:

  1. Support — Answers to frequently asked questions and step-by-step guidance to hosting a community event around the Youth Survey or a selected topic.
  2. Presentations, Handouts and Resources — In-depth looks at results for selected Youth Survey topics, including fact sheets and videos in several languages. Links to more information and where to go for help. Youth Survey topics include alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; bullying and cyberbullying; mental health-depression and suicide; nutrition and physical activity; and teen dating abuse.
  3. Take Action — Ideas on how to make a difference in the lives of youth in your community.

Unified Prevention Coalition Recognizes FCPS
