Parent/Student 90-minute Driver Education Session
In the fall of 2010, a new requirement in the 10th grade Driver's Education curriculum was implemented after the passage of HB 1782 during the 2009 General Assembly. Together, parents/guardians and students must attend a 90- minute presentation to learn about the licensing process, current rules of the road, new driving techniques and laws, the risks of drinking and driving, and teen brain development.
Research shows that parents have the greatest influence over their teen driver, serving as their instructors and enforcers of the law. This presentation is important as it provide the necessary educational tools and knowledge for parents who are charged by the state with authorizing, instructing, supervising and enforcing their teen's driving. It launches parents and their student drivers into the nine-month process of obtaining a driver's license, which includes: a permit test, 36 hours of classroom instruction of which the 90 minute parent/guardian/student session is a requirement, 45 hours of practical driving (15 at night), with a qualified adult, and 14 hours of formal Behind the Wheel instruction.
The last step is for both student and parent to attend the judicial licensing ceremony at the county courthouse. Virginia is unique in that decades ago it established this licensing ceremony in which the parent/guardian is handed the student's driver license. In this way, the parent/guardian is responsible for granting the driving "privilege" to his son or daughter.
Each FCPS high school offers this evening 90-minute presentation four times throughout the year. Parents are encouraged to attend before or during the quarter in which their 10th grade student is enrolled in Driver's Ed. For more information, contact your high school's driver's education teacher.
