Bringing Communities and Schools Together for the Prevention of Violence, Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Use by Youth

SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COALITIONS STRIVE TO:

  • Inform parents and community members about violence, drug, tobacco, and alcohol prevention
  • Support a wide range of safe and drug-free activities for youth
  • Coordinate community awareness seminars and youth forums
  • Encourage after-school programs for middle-school students
  • Provide opportunities for community members and youth to discuss current issues, develop strategies for action, and advocate for change
  • Support conflict resolution and peer mediation programs
  • Promote youth leadership, service to the community, and responsible citizenship

The school-community coalitions in Fairfax County support programs that foster an atmosphere where all youth can grow up in a safe environment free of violence, prejudice, and substance abuse. The coalitions are committed to strengthening family-community-school partnerships and are working to make a difference for youth. Coalitions are funded by federal grants, Fairfax County Public Schools, and by donations from members of the community.
